Elevator Safety Guide

General Elevator Safety

                                1. NEVER put hands, or any part of body, on doors or mechanisms.
                                2. DO be observant that all is normal before entering elevator cab after doors open:
                                           A. Cab is level with the floor
                                           B. Lights are on
                                           C. There is a cab present

                              3. NEVER overcrowd an elevator. If it should happen, excess weight will trigger the safety                                               mechanism and shut down elevator.

                              4. NEVER intentionally block elevator doors to keep them open. Use the “door open” button                                           instead. Otherwise, the elevator will time out and shut down.

                              5. NEVER Try to force open an elevator door for any reason!

                              6. DO protect small objects from falling in gaps between elevator cab and floor.

                              7. DO ask others on cab closest to elevator buttons to select floor.

                              8. DO move orderly to the rear and sides of the elevator cab as much as is practical upon                                               entering.

                              9. DO refrain from using cell phones and other electronic devices while in the cab.

                             10. DO be courteous and refrain from having loud conversations with others.

                             11. DO press the “emergency call” button in the event that the elevator cab stops, or the door                                            will not open.

                              12. DO wait patiently in the event of an elevator malfunction for help to arrive.

                              13. DO use the stairs in case of a fire.

Power Outage Elevator Safety

                              1. NEVER use an elevator during a power outage

                              2. Know where the stairs are in the building I

If you are in the elevator during the outage:

                              1. Don’t panic. Most elevators have an emergency phone that connects directly to the                                                   building’s security or maintenance departments.

                              2. Many elevators have a backup power supply that will bring the elevator to the first floor in                                               the event of an outage.

                              3. DO NOT open the doors to get out between the floors.

                              4. DO NOT climb onto the roof of the elevator.

                              5. Once out of the elevator, do not get back in until the power has been fully restored.
