A Kudo Email received by Crew Supv. Will Crosby:

"Dear Mr. William Crosby:

I found my office floor clean and shiny yesterday morning, and I want thank the person who did it.

As I understand, you are the supervisor for this building (Math/SC office 583), please give him/her a big salary increase.

 Best regards,

 Julio G. Dix"

Thank you Mr. Dix for the glowing praise for our custodial staff! We'll let them know how pleased you were with your office floor!

Trish Sumbera  at MCS completed a Custodial Operations Online Customer Satisfaction Survey. We thank her for giving us feedback. She stated that she was 'very satisfied' with the service performed which was cleaning and waxing 2 office spaces. She noted that David Garcia did an excellent job! Thank you Ms. Sumbera and thank you David!

Wow! Check out the Kudos From New Faculty Member,

Mr. Donald Griffin. (below)

Subject: Praise for your employees

Hi Mr. Crosby - I am Don Griffin, an ex-hospital administrator and a new faculty member in healthcare administration. I have been looking at our facility as I did some of the hospitals where I use to work...I must say that your crew does every bit the job that our facility housekeepers did. The floors shine, the bathrooms are spotless, the building is without odor...job well done. Our area is cleaned by Hector Guerro, Juan Villareal, and Josie Cordero; they do an outstanding job and it reflects well on you as their supervisor.

Thanks,

Don

Will Crosby, Crew Supv. we know you are proud of your Midnight Stars! So are we.

Thank you Mr. Griffin! Texas State Univerisity is fortunate to have an ex-hospital administrator join as a new faculty member and right off the bat notices AND praises the efforts of the Custodial Staff. This means so very much to the Management Team of Custodial Ops but I can tell you it will mean even more to the professional staff who maintain your building.

Hector Guerro, Juan Villareal, and Josie Cordero take a bow! We applaud you too!!!

UPDATE:

Arlette,

Thank you for taking the time to acknowledge our tardy, but appreciative message regarding Anna.  We’ve been meaning to do this for months and it finally made it to the top of my to-do list. I should also have mentioned that Paula Avarez who is responsible for the Police Department on the first floor of Nueces sometimes does double duty when Anna is called to work elsewhere.  As a result, everyone in the department would enthusiastically apply the same observations and recommendations for Paula’s work as  with Anna’s work.  We are all grateful for the excellent staff you’ve placed at our building.

Many thanks!

Barbara

Kudos - to Anna Vasquez!

"On behalf of the staff and faculty served by Ms. Anna Vasquez, we wish to express our appreciation for the excellent service she performs..   everything is professionall maintained and CLEAN --- and Anna is a joy to have around. Thank you"

Barbara Vansant

NUECES UPD 654

We're glad you mentioned the improvement you've noticed Barbara and the staff and faculty of Nueces!

Custodial Operations is making a concerted effort to improve the type of equipment we use, the chemicals, the processes and procedures for cleaning and for staff training. Obviously, none of this is effective if the staff doesn't 'buy-in'. Anna has always been a dedicated and conscientious team member. We had no doubts that she would embrace changes and put her own personal stamp of perfection on any building she maintains. Thank you for confirming that in writing.  And, Anna thank you for your continued dedication!

A recent email received from our neighbor near the Physical Plant, Mr. Prado. We're happy we could be of service to you and your co-workers, Mr. Prado.

"Thank you for the quick services in replacing the soap dispenser.

Great Customer Service."

"Kudos to Benita Garza, Anthony Ferrer, and Andrew Garcia! They did an excellent job in cleaning and waxing the floor of the LARGE office space, FH 110. It used to be a student lounge, so the floor was in bad shape. It's one of the best jobs I've seen!"

Karen Bryson

Admin. Asst.III

Flowers Hall

Those Kudos come to us courtesy of Karen as she completed our customer survey. We're happy that you're happy Karen. Benita, Anthony and Andrew are 'rising stars' in our book too!

It doesn't take much time to dash off a quick note to let someone know you appreciate their work. We know everyone is so busy now as but Dr. de la Teja we're glad you took that time!  It means so much to hear a 'thank you'.  He wrote to Fermin Torrez, Custodial Supervisor:

"Fermin,

Please thank your staff for cleaning up the south entry to TMH. It’s such a big improvement.

Regards,

Frank"

Today I was delighted at how professionally the custodial staff cleaned the Physical Plant building and my office and windows.  Your (our) staff were courteous, worked well as a team and did a terrific job. They looked like they were having fun!

Please pass on my sincere thanks to everyone involved.”

Pat

And, that is a much appreciated compliment from our esteemed Associate Vice President, Facilities, Mr. Pat Fogarty directed in particular to the day shift team, known as the Texas State Stars. Way to go, Stars! We continue to be amazed at how you make all that hard work look like fun. You’ve proven that when you like what you are doing and you do it oh so well, it can’t help but be noticeable.

Often the efforts of those who work so late at night may get less written ‘kudos’ because folks who will notice it work during the day and get busy and forget to write, maybe even too busy to notice the hard work.  But, we are certainly happy that Laurie Ellis is not one of those people. Though she is certainly busy she certainly was kind enough to give credit where credit is due and sent note of appreciation. Good Job  Phillip Williams and your ‘L Noche Knights’

“Dear Mr. (Phillip) Williams, (Crew Supervisor of the night team, ‘L Noche Knights’)

I want to thank you for doing such a great job cleaning the above offices and attached lab. The rooms look wonderful and we really appreciate your hard work.”

Marty Garcia works hard and cares about the quality of the work she performs. It’s great to know that her hard work is appreciated even though she’s not in Ms. Ybarra’s building permanently. Thank you Marty and thank you Ms. Ybarra!

“This is a “kudos” note for Marty Garcia, since we no longer have a permanent custodian, when Marty is at Commons she’s doing an outstanding job, she did a terrific job… on the floor down stairs entering the cafeteria.   It would be nice to have her taking care of Commons (all the time)…”

Irene Guerrero Ybarra

Our crew worked very hard at Trinity and someone noticed. Thank you, Ms. Allen for your appreciation of this hard-working group. We’ll let them know you noticed.

“Just wanted to send a little note to let you know what a great job that Oscar (Trevino) and his crew did in waxing the floor.  I was the only one in the office that day but that crew really did work very hard.  They also had a very professional attitude and it was nice listening to them work together.  So please let them know that we really do appreciate the hard work that they did for us.”

We have quite a few 'keepers' and Carmelita Castillo and Susie Gonzales are two of them that come to mind, thanks to a Kudos email from Sharon Nusbaum whose job requires that she frequent JCK. She is pleased that the good work Carmelita started at JCK is being continued by Susie; in fact she specified "really good"!

“…Today when I walked in about 6:55am she was cleaning the Speech & Drama side stairwell again.  Then I opened the doors to go inside and was met with a fresh clean smell from her mopping the floors.  I don’t know what she cleaned with, but it smelled wonderful and the floors were shining... I have to say Susie, and Carmelita are both keepers.  They are pleasant and get the work done."

Thank you for recognizing Susie and Carmelita, Sharon. "Pleasant AND get the work done." We like the sound of that and we know Susie and Carmelita will also.

Old Main you look marvelous! (click to see Old Main pictures on our MSDS page) Thanks to Mary Sanchez, Ana Hicks, Gloria Gonzales, Silvia Martinez, Valerie Marrero and Oscar Trevino. Administrative Assistant, Karen Guerra noticed and wants to thank you.

"I just wanted to tell you how beautiful Old Main is looking.  Kudos to:  Mary, Ana, Debbie, Gloria, Sylvia, Valerie and Oscar.  The floors are sparkling this morning!

 Thank you,

Karen"

 Great Job team!!

Well we told you so, Old Main. You DO look marvelous. Our grand building hosts many visitors and now they are greeted by a newly polished entry. Kindra Colgin, Sr. Administrative Asst. College of Fine Arts & Communication also was impressed with the post-weekend surprise.

"What a nice treat this morning, to be greeted with the sparkling shiny hallway floors upon entering Old Main! ... I haven't seen these floors shine like this in a while. It is especially important since this historical building hosts multiple tours throughout the day.

Please thank them for going above and beyond on our floors. Job well done!"

We agree. Job well done and thank you Mary, Ana, Debbie, Gloria, Silvia, Valerie and Oscar once again!

 June 2009

Well sometimes accidents happen and that doesn't faze Rosie Ortiz! Tiny dots from a 3 hole punch? No problem. Lesley Prewitt, Office of Institutional Research spoke of her gratitude for Rosie in this recent email:

"I have never seen a person work so hard and still remain so composed and cheerful! She has a dedication to her work that I don’t see very often and she always approaches a challenge with a positive attitude. Her willingness to help with any special request has been a blessing to us, on the rare occasion we need her help outside of her regular duties, for instance vacuuming at our request when someone accidentally spilt a hole punch tray of tiny dots everywhere. It would have taken hours to pick this up by hand – time we did not have just before a meeting was to begin."

Congratulations Rosie! Your hard work is appreciated and we know that means as much to you as it does to Custodial Operations.

Flowers Hall gets hard use but still shines, thanks in part to this group of custodians; Benita Garza, David Kavecki, Sal Rodriguez, Josie Cordero, Danny Bautista, Scott Plough, Heriberto Herrera, Francis Sandoval, Marie Thomas, Steve Villarreal and Anthony Ferrer. Recently, we received special thanks from Sue Beebe, Lower-Division Studies in English.

"Over the past few days a custodial team has done a remarkable job cleaning and polishing the floors of the main hallways in Flowers Hall.

They look beautiful!  In fact, I am continually impressed by the condition in which Flowers--a building that gets hard use--is kept."

We're impressed also. In fact, check out our MSDS page with a photo of Flowers Hall and you'll see just how impressed we are. Their work shines on and on. Thank you Flowers Hall custodians!

Benita Garza and David Garcia surprise Tomas Q. Morin, Senior Lecturer with the Department of English... a wonderful surprise. He writes:

"I am writing to let you know how pleased I am with the wonderful work Benita Garza and David Garcia did in my office, FH 238.  They scrubbed and waxed the floor, as well as replaced a chair with bad rollers; furthermore, they did all of this without my asking, which gave me a nice surprise when I visited my office this summer.  Please express my sincerest thanks to them."

We're happy that you are happy Mr. Morin but we're not surprised. Benita and David are always on top of their game making sure their customers are pleased. Thank you Benita and David!

Delia Hurtado and Mary Sanchez help to motivate while doing a great job. Beverly Pairett, Admin. Asst. III in the Philosophy Department writes:

"Subject: FW: Cleaning of offices 116, 102A and 102H

I just wanted to tell you what a great job Delia Hurtado and Mary Sanchez did today.   All the offices were in desperate need of cleaning and some of our faculty needed a like motivation which both happened with a little help from you and the girls.  Thanks again."

Yes, thank you Delia and Mary. You just never know how your hard work can lift someone’s day!

Kudos to Benita Garza and David Garcia from Treena Herington, Multicultural and General Studies.  They recently completed a carpet project and did a wonderful job.

"We are now ready to greet students and visitors and can be proud of our area!"

Great job once again!

May 2009

"I would like to tell you about the great job Paula (Alvarez) is doing here at the University Police Department." That's how the email begins from Sue Stewart, Police Officer UPD.

"I was impressed first when I came in on an evening shift on a Friday and found the women's bathrooms were recently cleaned. I know this may sound like her job but she makes certain it is done when needed and not just once in the morning. This is important to me because we come in at all hours of the day and night…Paula works hard every day with a smile on her face and seems to be happy to be working. I just want you to know how much I appreciate her efforts. She is doing an outstanding job and deserves a great big thank you! "

We appreciate her efforts too! Thank you Paula for your hard work and dedication to your customers!

Daily cleaning is important and no one does it better than the Texas State Custodial Operations staff. Custodian Chad Bose and Head Custodians Marcus Pacheco and Duane McLaughlin know this and work hard every day.  But, when a department hosts an event they hope that everything is perfect. Such was the case for the President's Staff Service Awards event in May. Mary Banks Vance, Director of Special Projects took time to offer her compliments and gratitude in a recent email:

"I just wanted to acknowledge the excellent work your staff did yesterday in preparation for the President’s Staff Service Awards event.  They really went the extra mile to make the balcony areas look perfect! … but he (Chad Bose) worked very hard transporting water to the other staff on the balconies so that they could wash the windows and mop. Please give him a copy of this email… I always enjoy working with your helpful staff.  You’ve got a great team there!"

After all is said and done after a special event, someone took the time to say just one more thing! Thanks Ms. Vance and Congratulations Chad, Marcus and Duane.

Kudos to Benita Garza and David Garcia from Tim Kerlin, Flowers Hall for the great cleaning job they completed in his office.

 "The office feels brand new!"

A 'big thank you' Benita Garza and David Garcia from Academic Advisor, Sandra George. She noted the wonderful office cleaning job they recently completed. Great job guys!

April 2009

Pam Franklin and Nina Del Rio work well together. How do we know? Because we've seen the effort they put into their work and we've received the kudos from their customers. Here's one from Laurie Ellis, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry hoping Pam and Nina will stay for a long time!

"I want to tell you that both Nina and Pam are doing a wonderful job keeping our building clean. They are both always busy and helpful. Last weekend they worked on our floors and they look fantastic! I’m not sure I’ve seen them look this good… I hope they both stay with us a long time!"

We do also, Ms. Ellis! Thank you Pam and Nina!

Well, David Garcia here's a special thank you just for you! Elizabeth Skerpah-Wheeler, Professor of English was so pleased with the work you did in her office that she wrote this email to your supervisor, Will Crosby.

"I want to acknowledge David Garcia, 3rd floor and mezzanine custodian in Flowers Hall.  He recently cleaned and waxed the floor in my office and it looks wonderful.  Please commend him for a job well done."

Thank you Ms. Skerpah-Wheeler and thank you David for your continuing commitment to excellent service!

Raul Rodriguez, Marty Garcia, Mary Sanchez, Debbie Govea and Valerie Marrero have what it takes to make a super team! Edward Ellis-Lai noticed and took the time to let our Director, Kim Graves know about it.

"I just want to formally thank you and commend your crew for the great job that was done to our office this past Saturday. I know that our floor condition was uneven and difficult to deal with, but they did their magic. Special thanks to Raul Rodriguez, whom appears to have taken the lead with this group of hard workers. Things don’t happen without team effort, and you have a great team that respects you, as they tell me that you are on top of every task.   I believe the team members are Marty Garcia, Mary Sanchez, Debbie Govea, and Valerie Marrero. Everyone here deserves Kudos and thanks from ITS."

That team deserves a big round of applause and congratulations for a job well done and duly noted!

Margie Flores is up to her usual... a really excellent job! Li Feng, Asst. Professor of Economics at McCoy Hall was so pleased with the deep cleaning of the carpets that he wrote this:

"I am writing to express my thanks to you and your staff, Margie. What a wonderful employee you have. She definitely takes initiative deep cleaning the carpet. I couldn't be happier...Thank you so much for creating a wonderful work environment for me."

And, we couldn't be happier to hear about Margie's great work! Way to go, Margie

When we receive an email titled "really clean bathrooms", you think 'somewhere a custodian is doing a good job'. But, Ana Hicks and Mary Sanchez are not just a doing a good job but a fantastic one. When the plumbing department makes note, well you just can't find a better expert than that!

Here's what Chad Wendel had to say about the preventive maintenance he, Kelly Vines and Mike Callihan were doing at Old Main:

"As we proceeded from floor to floor, we kept commenting on how shiny the chrome was in all the bathrooms. From the lavatory faucets to the Sloan flush valves on the urinals and the toilets. This was by far the cleanest set of restrooms on the entire campus. Usually we have to replace several of the chrome parts on each of the toilets and urinals. We used one part on all three floors in the men's and women's restrooms. That is simply unheard of. Ana Hicks and Mary Sanchez are doing a fantastic job for you over at the campus' original building."

Thank you Ana and Mary for the attention to detail that gets noticed. And, you thought no one looked under those urinals... well someone does and they are sure glad you don't take short cuts on your job!

Kudos to Nina Del Rio from Pat Naylor and the entire OFPDC Staff for her fine job filling-in for Carmelita Castillo.  Nina had a bit extra to do as staff  were moving offices and she rose to the challenge.

"Our Staff was shifting around offices this past week, so we asked Nina to do some extra cleaning duties. She went over and above her regular duties and made the new office spaces feel like home to our staff. And, she did all this always with a smile on her face and a warm, friendly attitude."

We enjoyed having Nina around too, Pat. Thank you and thank you Nina for your consistent good spirits and great work!

To Ana Hicks and Mary Sanchez: a great big thank you from Lisa Herman and Dean Cheatham.

"Please pass on our gratitude to custodians, Anna Hicks and Mary Sanchez for their excellent work at Old Main. Dean Cheatham held a special event on Wednesday, March 11th. Anna and Mary went above and beyond to make the room extra tidy for our guests. We appreciate the extra care they give to keeping Old Main beautiful."

We add our thanks to yours, Lisa. Ana and Mary will be pleased to know they are appreciated!
